Position Summary: This position is responsible for overseeing volunteers and students at Cornerstone Apartments and other sites for Mid-Valley Literacy Center (MVLC).  The person in this position is expected to work with the Executive Director to provide oversight and coordination of all volunteers and students.  This person will represent and promote the mission and vision of the MVLC in the community.  The position requires the ability to work with minimal supervision, requires sound judgment, and a high degree of personal integrity.   

Compensation: $15 per hour, part-time position, dependent on one year grant with the hope of full time and long term employment in the future.

Essential Responsibilities

1. Facilitates volunteer tutoring services for Cornerstone Apartments and our other sites

2. Oversees the coordination of all volunteers and tutoring services for MVLC, including Spanish literacy

3. Coordinate and administer student assessments and registration

4. Helps with recruitment of volunteers and assists with initial training

5. Assists with tutor orientations, support meetings, tutor workshops and in-service

6. Places volunteers and students appropriately in groups, in classrooms, and in community tutoring sites

7. Assists with locating community tutoring sites for conducting tutoring sessions

8. Provides guidance and recommendations for volunteer tutors regarding curriculum and tutoring strategies 

9. Understands, develops and provides a learning environment that supports diversity and incorporates a sensitivity to diversity 

10. Encourages and supports a positive learning environment for students and tutors

11. Assists with volunteer tutor appreciation events

12. Attends mandatory and/or recommended professional development activities including MVLC Tutor Training

13. Works with the Executive Director to promote literacy awareness in the community

14. Uses appropriate technology tools to accomplish job functions and maintain records 

15. Perform other duties as assigned by the Executive Director and Board of Directors.  



Education, Training, Skills and Abilities (Core Competencies)

1. Preference given for a bachelor’s degree or equivalent.  Additional course work preferred in TESOL, reading, special education or adult education

2. Requires a minimum of one year of experience coordinating adult literacy programs or community volunteer programs or similar programs

3. Requires one year of experience tutoring or teaching adults

4. Preference given for Bilingual (Spanish/English) and ability to work with English Language Learners 

5. Ability to work flexible hours, including some evenings and weekends

6. Must have reliable transportation and legal driver’s license

7. Demonstrate proficiency in computer technology, including M.S. Word, Excel, Access, Power Point, and Google sheets
